Ensuring Your Child’s Safety When Selecting a Sports Coach

Posted by Upper Hand | May 6, 2014 4:51:42 PM

As a parent your top priority is your child’s safety and that shouldn’t be something you have to worry about when selecting the right sports coach for your kids. Before you even consider signing your child up for a sports lesson or league there are some important things that you need to look for when selecting a coach.
Background Checks The coach that you are considering should already have, or be willing to undergo, a series of background checks. The 3 important background checks that should be completed are:

  1. The National Criminal Database Check
  2. The State Sex Offender Registry Check
  3. The County Criminal Database Check

Unfortunately, it is commonplace for many leagues and sports academies to never even do background checks on coaches and volunteers. If they do happen to conduct background checks, these leagues are many times strapped for funds and do the bare minimum, which consists of only a National and State Sex Offender Registry Check; Not a County Level Check. County level background checks are by far and away the most accurate form of safety checks in the industry and are rarely conducted due to the fact that they are more expensive than a National criminal database check. In order to ensure that no criminals slip through the cracks, background checks should be repeated annually. Finally, any youth sports league or academy should have their own safety policy that clearly outlines what a coach must adhere to in order to be accepted in to the respective program. If the sports league or academy that you are working with does not have a safety policy, this should be a red flag as it indicates that they are disorganized and do not take safety seriously.
Coaching History Make sure to ask lots of questions about their past coaching experience. They should have details about their past jobs and experience right in their profiles. This will allow you to see if there are any red flags or holes in their coaching history.
Reviews People wouldn’t take the time to leave a review if they didn’t have something important to say – good or bad; it’s worth taking a few minutes to see what others have experienced. Take the time to read any reviews that the coach you are considering has listed. You can learn a lot from the good or bad experiences that other people have had with that particular coach. If there are multiple reviews pointing out the same problem then that should be a red flag and you will want to find another coach for your kids.

One of the best things you can do is use a reputable site like bookacoach.com to help you find a great coach that you and your kids will love. Bookacoach prides themselves on the fact that all of their coaches are put through a certification process where they are required to go pass all 3 of the mandatory background checks listed above. Furthermore, each coach’s profile will have the BAC Certification Icon listed in their profiles with the dates that each check was run and reviewed; making it easy for you to have peace of mind when your child is participating in their lessons. You can also view a brief bio on each coach and see what others have said about them in the Reviews section of each Coaches profile. Don’t waste any more time.
